Black Sideboard – Matt, High Gloss, with Gold: How Black Looks Best

Matt, velvet matt, high gloss or with gold: how a black sideboard looks, what it goes with and which pieces we have restored.

A black sideboard looks its best when finish and form go together: matt emphasises the lines, gold adds an accent, and a graphic pattern turns the piece into a statement. High gloss, by contrast, is a good choice in only a few rooms. This article compares the variants, gives dimensions and prices from our workshop and shows what a black sideboard goes with. You will find the general basics on dimensions, styles and construction in the sideboard buying guide.

Why black works on a sideboard

A sideboard is usually the largest piece of furniture along a wall. A pale colour makes it visually disappear until the first mark appears. Black does the opposite: it traces the silhouette, hides small signs of use and gives the brass, wood and ceramics standing on it a calm background. There is also a practical reason. Over the years, the wood of old furniture has gathered repairs, colour differences and veneer patches. A carefully built-up black paint turns these into a uniform surface without losing the form. You can read more about the effect on other furniture in our article Black chest of drawers.

Matt, velvet matt or high gloss

The finish decides at least as much as the colour.

FinishEffectEveryday use
MattCalm, modern, absorbs lightForgives fingerprints; scratches are easy to touch up
Velvet mattSoft, almost textile, elegantAs matt, looks slightly more refined in raking light
High glossReflective, dramaticShows every fingerprint and every unevenness in the substrate

High gloss requires a flawlessly sanded substrate, because every dent is reflected. On old furniture with veneer and repair areas this rarely makes sense, and in daily life a glossy black surface shows dust and marks immediately. Our sideboards are therefore painted matt or velvet matt. One example is the Art Deco sideboard from 1935 in velvet matt black, which at 145 x 80 x 46 cm is among the more compact pieces (€2,050, sold; an identical piece can be sourced to order).

Black and gold

Anyone searching for a “black and gold sideboard” usually means one of two things: narrow gold frames around doors and sides, or handles and fittings in brass. They are not the same, and the two can be combined.

  • Gold frames: Thin lines that edge the doors and side panels. They look precise and graphic, especially on straight-lined pieces from the 1930s and 1960s.
  • Brass fittings: Warm metal on matt black, calmer than gold paint and lovelier over time because brass develops a patina.
  • Gold leaf: Real gold leaf as a frame takes more work and gives the lines a particular depth. Ask about it if you are ordering a piece.

Two examples from our workshop: a sideboard from around 1930 in matt black with narrow gold frames and an interior in Farrow & Ball Railings, with new handles in brass and black twisted natural leather (145 x 85 x 46 cm, €1,600, sold). And a teak sideboard from around 1960 with gold frame and brass feet (152 x 106 x 43 cm, €2,050, sold). Both pieces show how differently the same colour combination can look. You will find more on the period of the second in the article Mid century sideboard.

Black and white, and patterns

If black on its own is too severe, a graphic pattern is an option. The Art Deco sideboard in graphic black and white from around 1930 has matt black paint, a black and white pattern and leather-wrapped handles in solid brass (144 x 78 x 48 cm, €2,050, sold). The sideboard with a green and blue pattern, on the other hand, is currently available: the top and legs are painted in matt black, and the doors and sides carry a pattern inspired by Art Deco (142 x 81 x 48 cm, €2,050). If you are interested in the period, you will find more in Art Deco sideboard and Art Deco furniture.

Combining black with style

A black sideboard suits almost any surroundings, but a few rules help:

  • Wall colour: White, greige and sage make the piece stand out. Against dark walls it becomes a silhouette; it then needs good lighting.
  • Floor: Pale wood and terrazzo contrast; a dark floor needs a rug as a separator.
  • Decoration: A few larger objects work better than many small ones. A lamp, a picture and a vase are enough. Living room sideboard offers guidance on styling.
  • Brass: It suits fittings, lamp bases and frames; two to three metal tones in a room is a sensible maximum.

Gustavian in black

The Gustavian style is regarded as light and pale, yet it looks severe and elegant in black. The matt black sideboard in the Gustavian style is currently available: restored, with adjustable shelves and new solid brass fittings made by hand in Småland (185 x 81 x 44 cm, €2,400). Not every black is the same

There is a clear difference between deep black and off-black. Deep black looks strong and graphic; off-black, a slightly broken black, looks softer and suits warm walls and wooden floors better. The interior counts too: a sideboard painted dark green or grey inside surprises you when you open the doors and so looks of higher quality than a uniformly black interior. If you have a particular wall colour, send us a photo or the colour name, and the tone can be matched to it.

Frequently asked questions

Isn’t a black sideboard too dark for small rooms?

Not if the wall is pale. A low piece 80 cm high takes up little space, and against a pale background black looks more like a frame than a wall.

Which finish is easiest to care for?

Matt or velvet matt. A damp, soft cloth is enough, and small scratches are less noticeable than on high gloss.

Can I order a sideboard in a different shade?

Yes. When you order a similar piece, we are happy to help you find the right shade for your interior. Write to us via the contact form.

How long does a matt black paint last?

With normal use, many years. Coasters for anything hot or wet, felt pads under lamps and vases and a soft cloth instead of harsh cleaners are important. Scratches can be touched up, because solid wood can be repainted as often as you like.
